Detaining CanadiansPDF files may take a moment to load

What if it was you? More importantly, what if it was me? Locked up overseas, away from everything that mattered, unaware who was working to find answers for you, or if you would ever know freedom again. It was not myself, and it was not you, either. Maybe that is why Maher Arar flew relatively under the radar for much of his nightmare.

Merging for the betterPDF files may take a moment to load

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm a Tory supporter and I'm glad that Peter MacKay wasn't going to be cowed by David Orchard. Yes, you heard me right, I'm glad this has happened.

Being a social liberal while being fiscally conservative, I was once the stereotypical Tory on a merger, vowing to fight to the bitter end without ever submitting to that horrid western-party-in-federal-drag Canadian Alliance. Today, I admit I might have been a tad hasty.

Your actions matterPDF files may take a moment to load

For the past two weeks, walking from my parking space to school, I've passed a shattered Kokanee bottle on the sidewalk. There's nothing particularly special about it, just shards of brown glass pushed up against a wall. But it makes me think.

Here's what I think happened.

"We live isolated from the rest of the world excepting the United States. We need not commit ourselves anywhere except out of generosity or goodwill. There is a risk of terrorist attack, but hard power will never protect us from terrorism."

University of TobaccoPDF files may take a moment to load

According to the dictionary of hackneyed cliches, necessity makes strange bedfellows and over the years, the Students' Union has provided numerous examples. Recently the student body was treated to one such illustration when the Calgary Herald ran a story about a sponsorship deal allegedly cut between the SU and American tobacco manufacturer Rothmans Inc. Predictably, the news prompted a firestorm of discussion in the university community, even attracting a whopping 15 posts to the SU online forums.

The irrational majorityPDF files may take a moment to load

I like to think the majority of people are fairly intelligent and capable of making rational decisions based on sound reasoning. Maybe I'm an optimist, but I feel quite confident about the average citizen's ability to see through political rhetoric and know what's right in the end. This was my point of view until the recent phenomenon of The Governator.

Shotgun wedding on the rightPDF files may take a moment to load

When I was in high school, I decided to join the Progressive Conservatives. You know, just for kicks and for some political experience. Inspired by the Jean Charest-led turnaround during the 1997 election, I chose the Tories because I did not empathize with the then-newly formed Canadian Alliance.

In the face of the political conditions at that time, you'd think I was crazy. The Liberals were almost invincible and the Canadian Alliance had the strongest hold on the West.

Making the wrong choicesPDF files may take a moment to load

People I've never met make decisions every day. Wrong decisions. If we can't stop the wrong people from making the wrong decisions, how do we win as a whole? Besides violence and childish name-calling, I'm stumped.

Friendly bed buddiesPDF files may take a moment to load

Friends with benefits, "friends," and bed buddies are but a few of the names to describe an acquaintance fulfilling sexual needs and desires--they are your sexual safety net.

The beauty of the safety net is that attachment is not an issue, you sleep together and nothing is expected. They are the ones that you call on at 4 a.m. when you need a fix, they are show you go to the bar with and if you leave in the cab together you know it's a sure thing, they are the booty call.

First of all, let's get a few things straight. Yes, I am the Emily Elder who has been raising stink about some of the Gauntlet's advertising, for reasons you'll soon learn if you finish this article. Yes, I am a feminist. No, I do not hate men, or sex, or porn.
