Calgarys western complacencyPDF files may take a moment to load

In hindsight, Calgary is a great city to hold events like the recent G8 Summit. This isn't because the summit went smoothly, but because the Stampede never does, and we still put up with it.

The people of this city would never stand for the crap that marked the ten days that were this year's Stampede for anything other than redneck fun.

An essential elementPDF files may take a moment to load

How many times have you found yourself postponing essential things that need to be done? Whether it be a simple task or a major project, once is one time too many. It is always easier to procrastinate or defer the things that life requires us to do, but in doing so we gamble with the future.

Blissful post-graduate abyssPDF files may take a moment to load

"Mid-life crisis" is a term most of us are quite familiar with. Bob, a hard-working family man, turns 50, feels the need to re-evaluate his life and suddenly panics. He proceeds to dye his hair blonde, buy a convertible and cheat on his wife. What Bob may not know is his son, 25-year-old Bob Junior, may be experiencing similar feelings of hopelessness, fear and confusion. Some therapist out there cleverly coined this the "quarter-life crisis."

Sharon’s worst enemy is peacePDF files may take a moment to load

Ariel Sharon, the Prime Minister of Israel, has a fear. It isn't new Palestinian guerrilla tactics that scare him, nor is it the growing number of refusenik Israeli army officers. So what is Mr. Sharon so fearful of? Peace. Nothing threatens Sharon more. And that's why I believe Mr. Sharon will reject the most recent and groundbreaking Saudi peace proposal and try to drown it in bloodshed and violence.

The mirage of moralityPDF files may take a moment to load

It is most unsettling to hear people speak of how morally guided the "war on terror" is. Perhaps the greatest ill America suffers in the post-September 11 era is the loss of reason-one of the key aspects of western civilization.

Clashing world viewsPDF files may take a moment to load

After nearly five years of working as a quasi-journalist, it's still a marvel to contemplate the bitter arguments that have coloured my existence at the Gauntlet.

There are few other places where people engage so passionately as to be moved to write about it. It's simultaneously enlightening and saddening to see generations of editors, letter writers and columnists use opinion in ways that always means more than the
opinion itself.

There are two types of people.

Idiots shame Voltaire’s assertionPDF files may take a moment to load

It was the wise and seasoned French phil-osopher Henri Voltaire who said "I disagree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

The premise behind ole' Henri's words now form the premise of one of our most beloved and cited fundamental human rights, the right to freedom of speech. Good ole' Henri cemented in his profound statement the importance of diversity of opinion and the protection of dissenting voices. Good ole' Henri should have shut his pie hole.

The freedom of youthPDF files may take a moment to load

Considering how much we value freedom, it results in a startling amount of lamentation. By far, the greatest freedom we have is the ability to do what we will and to live our lives as we see fit. So why are there so many long faces and lost souls in the days leading up to February 14?

It’s no sin being singlePDF files may take a moment to load

Christmas is a weird time of year for a breakup.

Not only is it the perennial season of togetherness, cuddling on bearskin rugs, and ad nauseum re-runs of The Sound of Music but Valentine's Day is only two months away. One may survive the "most wonderful time of the year" and regain a measure of sanity only to be assailed by the perennial celebration of coupledom when being single is reason enough to wrap oneself in sackcloth and wander around with a sign reading "Unclean!"
