Here come the Thunderbirds. Number one in the country. Unbeaten at 11-0 so far in this men's basketball season. Runners-up at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship last season. The team that knocked the Dinos out of the tournament. The team the Dinos beat to take the conference title last year. The team that knocked the Dinos off at home in the Canada West final four the year before.

Harle's hoopsters take aim at seasonPDF files may take a moment to load

Despite an impressive 2-1 result at this weekend's University of Calgary Invitational, the Dinos women's basketball team face a number of challenges in the season ahead.

They downed the McMaster University Marauders 91-65 on Friday, lost to the University of Regina Cougars 92-79 on Saturday and managed to score a narrow 80-78 victory over the Universite Quebec à Montreal Carabins, but head coach Shawnee Harle is focused on what these early results mean.

The last time the Dinos men's basketball team played a meaningful game, it was on the hard court of Scotiabank Place against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the national semi-finals in Ottawa in March. They had beaten the T-Birds a scant two weeks earlier to capture the Canada West conference crown for the first time since 2004 and were looking to take a spot in the national final for the first time since 1966.

Henry Bekkering takes his final bowPDF files may take a moment to load

Henry Bekkering wants Villanova to win the NCAA March Madness tournament. Unfortunately, he says, the University of Conneticutt and North Carolina look too strong and will probably meet in the championship game.

Almost three weeks after his final game with the Dinos the six-foot, 240 pound star forward still has the sport on his mind.

Vanhooren reflects on successful b-ball seasonPDF files may take a moment to load

It's hard to believe that the defining moments for a year's worth of work and effort could be just a few games. But that's what most sports teams experience and that's what the Dinos men's basketball team experienced this weekend when they flew out to Ottawa to take part in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Final 8 tournament for the first time since 2004.

Four points. Five points. For this year's Dinos men's basketball squad, those numbers ultimately defined their season. There were only four points between the Dinos and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the Canada West Final, which the Dinos won 80-76. And there were only five points between the two teams in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport semi-final, this time in favour of the T-Birds, 79-74.

But for Dinos fifth-year forward Henry Bekkering, it came down to a different number. One play.

Ballers sting Concordia in O-TownPDF files may take a moment to load

If the Concordia University Stingers took away anything from the 76-67 beating handed to them by the University of Calgary Dinos in the quarterfinal game at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Final 8 men's basketball tournament last Friday at Scotiabank Place in Kanata, Ontario, it's that size does indeed matter.

The freewheeling brothers Bekkering proved too much for the Stingers as their small but speedy style did not match up to the frames of Henry and Ross.

Introducing the LeadersPDF files may take a moment to load

Hooliganism is an ugly word, associated with crowd violence in British and South American football. It's associated with fans' passion for a team getting out of hand. Now the University of Calgary Dinos have their own hooligan, the Leaders.

If the University of Calgary men's basketball team were writing this they would set aside perhaps just one short paragraph to describe their Canada West championship-winning weekend.

They do, after all, have bigger, bolder aspirations: the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship.

Dinos prove to be more than Alberta can BearPDF files may take a moment to load

It only took the University of Calgary men's basketball team two games to claim the Canada West Central Division Championship title for the second year in a row.

It was only fitting the wins did not come easy against arch-rival University of Alberta Golden Bears who split the 2008/09 season series with the Dinos at two wins a piece.

A final fourth-quarter, 31-point offensive push by the Bears in Saturday's game almost worked as they climbed within four points of the Dinos.
