Two commissioners resign over scandal

By Jane Alkhouri

After only five months in power, the 58th Student Legislative Council (SLC) has driven two of its commissioners to madness and had to ask for their resignations. OK, so that’s NOT TRUE but I thought this would get your attention. Although, I am sure it would have made a great story if it actually happened.

However, it is voting time once again for all three of you that actually come out and vote in the SU byelection. You pay your SU fees and you should have a say in who is representing you. At the SU office when people come out to vote we like to call that a "license to bitch."

What’s up for grabs? One spot on each of the following: the Operations and Finance Commission, the External Commission, and two spots for the Faculties of Kinesiology and Education on the Student Academic Assembly (SAA). And even better, we have candidates for most of them!

Kellie Ann Leslie was acclaimed as the representative for Kinesiology. Unfortunately, no one was interested in the Faculty of Education representative spot. However, for the two commissioner spots we will have a vote. When? Oct. 11-13.

For Op & Fi we have: Sam Chhean, Lara Barbara Kaiser and Robbie White eyeing the position. In the External race we have Paul Trinh and Paul Jared Chinook. Who are these people? Well you can read their platforms in this issue of the Gauntlet.

Now after reading this you are supposed to get all excited and want to vote in the byelection. After all, it’s your right as a student. However, on this campus no one seems to really care until they have a problem and come by the SU office to whine and complain. OK, that’s what your student representatives are here for; however, most of the time those who whine and complain are often those who have never paid attention to anything or even bothered voting. So next week, why don’t you take the time to read the platforms of the candidates, dig up your student ID card, find a polling station (they are all over campus) and vote. And next time you are angry at us you can come by the office and find someone to bitch at.

So are you still wondering what the real story is with their resignations? Peter Yoon from the Operations and Finance Commission got a new job which is keeping him very busy along with his classes. As for my former fellow External Commissioner Stefan Lohka he is off riding his bike across Europe for a year and probably having the time of his life on the Mediterranean Sea right now.

Voting dates and times:
• October 11 from
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
• October 12 from
9:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
• October 13 from
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
