Weekend Update: Men’s Hockey

By Darren Friesen

2001 could not have started any worse for the already underachieving Dinos’ men’s hockey team. Losses to the first-place Golden Bears are something Calgary now accepts, however, losses to the last-place University of Regina Cougars are something the Dinos could not have predicted this late in the season.

Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena, the U of C sought to bounce back from their previous week’s losses; to turn things around by beating the visiting Cougars. Although the Dinos were able to take early first and second period leads, the Regina squad seemed to have the answer for every play by the

U of C. Responding immediately after every Calgary goal, the Cougars easily defeated the Dinos 6-3. Despite outshooting Regina, Calgary was unable to stay out of the penalty box in the third and this proved too costly for them as the U of R converted on two crucial powerplay opportunities.

Saturday’s action once again exposed the slumping U of C team. After falling behind early, the Dinos struggled to keep the game close. Ultimately, the Cougars capitalized on their chances and put the game away in the third with a late period marker. The Dinos now remain winless in their last four games, and look to be in tough against the strong University of Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend.
