Women’s Volleyball: Weekend Update

By Daorcey Le Bray

Kevin Boyles can’t stop smiling.

The Head Coach of the women Dinos volleyball team has good reason to be happy. As far as the Canada West finals are concerned, the Dinos are in the house.

Two undisputed triumphs in Regina last weekend proved the women will dominate in the regional final and quite possibly at the national finals.

"It was tough… they were a decent team," Boyles conceded of the Saskatchewan Huskies after the weekend series.

Yet the fact remains that the Dinos won six straight matches against the struggling prairie dogs.

Friday evening began slowly as the Dinos were forced to grind their way to a tense 30-28 win. The close set was due to many factors outlined by Boyles: a low roof, and a small gym full of very loud fans. As if this wasn’t enough, the Dinos managed eight painful service errors.

It took the women in red and white some time to regain their precious momentum, but with the mature play of Amanda Moppett they eventually returned to control the rest of the match, winning by scores of 25-22 and 25-17.

The next evening brought no hope for the gals from Saskatoon as the Dinos splattered the hapless Huskies all over the court. In three shining sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-21), the Dinos controlled the whole match.

If the Dinos can win at least two of their last four matches this season, they will secure a bye for Canada West and host the Canada West final at home.
