New VP Academic

Without much fanfare, Students’ Union Academic Commissioner and fourth-year Political Science student Jayna Gilchrist became the new Vice-President Academic. The Students’ Academic Assembly–empowered last week by the Student’s Legislative Council to fill the vacancy left by former VP Academic Rosie Nagra–voted 12-0 in favor of electing Gilchrist, the only candidate, on Mon., Jan. 20. Gilchrist was sworn in at the Students’ Legislative Council meeting on Tue., Jan. 21.

“I’ve been interested in this position for quite a while,” she said. “I enjoy committees, dealing with different representatives and hope to strongly state student opinions as clearly as possible.”

As an eight-month veteran of the Students’ Union, campus clubs, committees and an active member of the Liberal Party of Canada, Gilchrist brings experience and perspective to her new role.

“I feel SAA is a lot more important than Ms. Nagra gave them credit for,” she said. “I see how vital faculty representatives and academic commissioners are.”

Gilchrist’s ascension leaves one academic commissioner position vacant. Also vacant is the position of Humanities Faculty Representative, a result of Jordan Petty’s resignation last week. The academic commission has made no decisions about filling either vacant position.
