Women’s basketball

The University of Calgary women’s basketball team saw some sad slaughter and some sweet success in Saskatchewan on Saturday and Sunday. They broke a four-game losing streak this weekend, bringing them to 7-9 on the season.

The Dinos met the University of Regina Cougars Sat., Jan. 31. Lindsay Maundrell and her tall socks dominated for the Dinos with 23 points. Unfortunately her stupendous performance didn’t earn the Dinos a win. They fell 54-63.

“It was a great game,” noted Head Coach Shawnee Harle. “I felt that against Regina we played our best ball of the year.”

Luckily, as some famous person once said, all’s well that ends well. Sun., Fri. 1 saw the Dinos face the Brandon University Bobcats and their woeful 4-11 record. Needless to say, our ladies enjoyed sending the Bobcats their twelveth loss of the season. The Dinos danced to the tune of a 66-52 pummelling.

Tanya Hautala led on the scoreboard with 15 points. Maundrell and Cory Bekkering were close behind her, netting 14 and 11 respectively.

Maundrell feels the team played a solid game on Sunday.

“When I penetrated the defence, help came and I had the option to dump if I didn’t have a shot,” she said.

“The team played with a lot of character, a lot of heart,” agreed Hautala. “It was a good test.”

This win will hopefully put the Dinos back on the track to the success they were derailed from since the Christmas break. So far, this year’s games have seen one or two players putting up huge numbers while the rest of the team hits one or two baskets. Sunday’s game proves when more players are playing to their potential, the team can easily take the win.

“We are continuing to get better,” beamed Harle. “I know for sure that no one wants to play us in the first round of playoffs.”

Associate Coach Claire Mitton is looking forward to what the next two weeks will bring.

“Finishing at home is a great way to decide our destiny,” she explained.

With only two weekends of play left before playoffs the ladies hope to ooh and aah the home crowd Feb., 7 and 8 with two wins against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in the Jack Simpson Gymasium. See you there!
