Club me till I’m week

By Dean Hetherington

Every year during the second week of each session, MacEwan Student Centre becomes the site of mass gathering of students. No, these aren’t mosh pits, but Clubs Week, where clubs from all across the campus set up their information booths to dispense information and entice students to join their ranks.

“Approximately 50 to 70 clubs participate in Clubs Week,” stated Students’ Union Clubs Chair Jonathan Griffith. “This event is usually quite popular with students, we find that a lot of people take this opportunity to get involved with and find out about the great things that clubs have to offer.”

This large number of clubs is spread out under 10 umbrella groups that gather clubs and societies in their foci and interests.

They will be out in full force from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Sept. 20-24.

“Clubs really take this opportunity to show their stuff,” said Griffith. “They enjoy this opportunity, and they feel it is important to their recruitment and membership. It’s a great way to get involved with the student body.”

Club membership offers perks such as 15 per cent off at the Den on Clubs Nights on Tuesdays, discounts at Bound and Copied, in addition to what individual clubs offer.

For example, membership could entitle a student use of the club’s lounge at the SU Clubs Space (or another location on campus) and its facilities, or admissions to the clubs events like Den cabs and other parties.)

Members of all clubs are invited to a Clubs Barbeque on Friday, where they will be treated to a free burger and a drink.

But benefits from club membership go beyond the basics: it is a chance for students to connect, network, and create friendships with other like-minded individuals.

“I would really like to invite all students and especially the frosh to come by to check out Clubs Week to see what clubs they may want to join and find out information how to get involved on campus,” invited Griffith.
