Soccer and snow?

With week six of soccer action coming to a close, the Dinos men stand in fifth place with only two wins under their belt. The second win came Fri., Oct. 15, courtesy of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, again.

The Huskies’ Jordan Schidlowsky scored first at the 22 minute mark, leaving the Dinos to take it from behind once again. Schidlowsky has scored 50 per cent of the Huskies goals so far this season and is one of the top scorers in the league (take note Dinos boys).

Matt Houston was the first to score for the Dinos at 35 minutes. Houston currently holds the “Best Wingman” title for helping his buddies score. He shares the record for most assists in the league with Jon Konye of the University of Alberta Golden Bears with five to his credit. His goal was followed closely by one from Adam “A-Mac” MacDonald at 41 minutes, giving the Dinos the lead at the end of the first half.

The Dinos continued to lay it on thick, but did not score again until the second half began to wind down. Final stats for the game showed that the University of Calgary had doubled the Huskies shots on goal and corner kicks. At 90 minutes Mazin Tabsh put the final nail in the coffin, giving the Dinos men their final goal. The final score was 3-1 for the Dinos.

The Huskies are now the only team to be eliminated from playoff contention in Canada West. As host, the Dinos are guaranteed a playoff spot.

Alberta weather, being the bitch it is, prevented the men from tussling with the Bears. Due to the profusion of snow vomited from the sky in Edmonton Saturday night, the playing fields were a disaster. How unfortunate. An exciting rematch with the Bears (the team we love to hate) will be rescheduled for later in the season.

This weekend is huge for the men since they are hosting both the Trinity Western University Spartans and the University of Victoria Vikes. These two teams have been neck and neck for first place in the Canada West conference for weeks. This should be a good preview of the Canada West Finals. The Dinos host TWU on Sat., Oct. 23 and UVic on Sun., Oct. 24. Both games are at 2:15 p.m. on the new field.
