By Diana Lyuber

For the fourth year running, Overflow kicked off the year last Thursday with an unbeatable combination of great music, good vibes, and lotsa booze. The Students’ Union packed MacEwan Hall with help from local talents DJ John Delirious, Dragon Fli Empire and Chixdiggit, along with well known party band Swollen Members. “It went really well,… Continue reading Overflow is over

Disappointment over SU smoking policy

By Stephanie Claggett

On Sept. 14, the Students’ Union passed a policy attempting to reconcile their position on smoking with the Smoke-Free University of Calgary sub-committee’s position. Unfortunately, the policy, while well meaning, doesn’t call for any real action. “Essentially, the policy doesn’t change a lot,” said SU Vice-President Operations and Finance Greg Clayton, who went on to… Continue reading Disappointment over SU smoking policy

Sia

By Ivan Danielewicz

Most of the time a certain mood needs to be set to get into a CD, to feel the rhythms and get hooked into its beats. This time, Sia evokes a specific mood and atmosphere demanding attention. The smooth vocals and soft beats characterizing the album brings about a definite sense of relaxation. After taking… Continue reading Sia

Wilco

By Peter Hemminger

The ghost may have been born and with us for a few months now, but even with so much time to process, it still comes off a little disappointing. In some cases giving fellow… Continue reading Terror Squad

Joni Mitchell

By Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed

“… an essay, a tragedy, an opera, a dark comedy…” These words, presented within the insert of The Beginning of Survival, perfectly describe Joni Mitchell’s latest release, an album spanning two decades of socially-conscious music. Each song was specially selected to follow, as Joni puts it, “commentaries on the world in which we live.” From… Continue reading Joni Mitchell

Bjork

By Peter Hemminger

Is it frightening that an album could be considered strange and inaccessible even by Bjork’s standards? Pop music’s queen of artistic indulgence and that’s meant in the most positive of ways has long gotten away with everything she’s tried. Her eccentric albums, her turn at acting in one of the most depressing musicals ever filmed… Continue reading Bjork
