An ironically indoor outdoor show

With pollution and environmental issues on the rise, people are becoming more and more conscientious of the recreational activities they take part in. As a result, Calgary has grown into a diamond in the rough for outdoor lovers and weekend warriors of all types. Many people are beginning to follow the trend, and outdoor adventurers of all breeds were treated to a weekend dedicated to the activities that make them tick.


The Stampede Roundup Centre and Canada Olympic Park were home to the Advil Outdoor Show Apr. 1-3. The show featured activities ranging from skiing and snowboarding to kayaking, camping and a bike expo.


The snowboarding and ski jam took place at COP and was accompanied by concerts all weekend. Activities at the hill featured both up and coming riders, as well as some of Calgary’s most promising shredders that truly tear it up on the snow. Some of the musical acts in attendance included Social Code and Finger Eleven.


The bike expo at the Roundup Centre showcased industry leading bike companies such as Rocky Mountain, Norco, Giant, Orange and Santa Cruz to name a few. Local bike shops were also out promoting for the approaching season. Shops at the show were Bow Cycle, Mission Snow and Skate, The Bike Shop and Cycle Path. Businesses were able to mingle with customers and expo goers of all interests, creating an interesting, yet successful atmosphere.


The public was also treated to continuous dirt jumping, street and trials demonstrations on the 10,000 square foot dirt track in the middle of everything. Riders of all levels were given the chance to showcase their talents on the course. Stunts catered to all skill levels and helped to encourage a really strong vibe all weekend for riders and spectators alike.


Mission Snow and Skate held several BMX demonstrations on the open course and gave the crowd even more to marvel over. Local and out of town riders showcased their talents. Those in attendance were given the opportunity to watch such local icons and pro riders like Jared Jesperson, Doug Fink, Sam Jepson and Dylan Tremblay. Riders signed autographs for the fans and wowed the crowd in between with their undeniable skills on two wheels.


On all ends, the Advil Outdoor Show seemed to go off without too many hitches and proved a successful event in a city that has such great potential for outdoor excursions of all types.


The show would not have been possible without the co-operation of spectators, exhibitors and most importantly volunteers. A big thanks goes out to everyone involved for putting together not only a wonderful bike track to rip on, but also a wonderful weekend of riding where participants and spectators were not disappointed.
