Letter: Thank you, Hillel

By Farryl Rubensohn

Editor, the Gauntlet,

In December, just before exams, I held a bake sale entitled “Love in Africa” in Science Theatres. All the money raised from this sale will be used to enhance children’s educational opportunities and help people achieve sustainability in Tanzania and Rwanda. I will be taking the money to these countries and using it over the summer. In order to utilize space in the university to hold this bake sale, it was necessary for me to collaborate with a school club. Hillel was more than willing to help me out and rather than just offering me the use of their club name, decided to help me advertise, bake and sell. Most generously, they also decided to match the funds raised dollar for dollar. The total profits from the bake sale were $1,478. Hillel has just finished raising money through their own activities in order to fulfill this financial promise. Thus, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to them. Hillel has gone above and beyond its duties as a school club and sets an example for what passionate students are capable of doing. To the student and administrative body who supported my bake sale and to Hillel, I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks or, as we say in Swahili, “Asante Sana“!
